Withholding Tax (TAN) Registration in India
Introduction
TAN stands for Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number. It is a 10 digit alphanumeric number required to be obtained by all persons responsible for deducting or collecting tax. Sec 203A of Income Tax Act 1961, mandated quotation of TAN in all TDS returns.
Procedure
Application for TAN can be made using form 49B. There are two ways to apply for TAN
Online method
Procedure
An online application can be filed by visiting TIN-NSDL website https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/tan/form49B.html.
Applicant need to fill the Form 49B online and submit the form.
A confirmation screen with all data filled will be display; the applicant may either edit or confirm the same.
On confirmation, an acknowledgement screen will be displayed. Save and print the acknowledgement.
Signature / Left thumb impression should only be within the box provided in the acknowledgment. In case of applicants other than 'Individuals', the authorised signatory shall sign the acknowledgment.
Left hand Thumb impression, if used, should be attested by a Magistrate or a Notary Public or Gazetted Officer, under official seal and stamp.
Payment
The fee for processing TAN application is Rs. 65.00 ( Rs. 55.00 application charge + 18.00% Goods and Services Tax)
Payment can be made by
1.demand draft or
2.cheque or
3.credit card / debit card or
4.net banking
Demand draft / cheque shall be in favor of 'NSDL - TIN'.
Name of the applicant and the acknowledgment number should be mentioned on the reverse of the demand draft / cheque.
Demand draft shall be payable at Mumbai.
Applicants making payment by cheque shall deposit a local cheque (drawn on any bank) with any HDFC Bank branch across the country (except Dahej). The applicant shall mention TAN NSDL on the deposit slip.
Credit Card / Debit Card / Net Banking payment.
Facility of making payment by credit card /debit card / net banking is not available for below mentioned categories:
1.Central Government/State Government an
2.Statutory/Autonomous Bodies
Submission of Documents
On successful payment by credit card/debit card/net banking an acknowledgment will be displayed. Applicant shall save and print the acknowledgment and send to NSDL as mentioned in section ‘Submission of Documents’ below.
The acknowledgment duly signed , along with demand draft,if any, shall be sent to NSDL at
NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited,5th floor, Mantri Sterling,Plot No. 341, Survey No. 997/8,Model Colony,Near Deep Bungalow Chowk,Pune – 411016
Superscribe the envelope with ‘APPLICATION FOR TAN –Acknowledgment Number’.
Your acknowledgment and demand draft, if any , should reach NSDL within 15 days from the date of online application.
Application will be processed only on receipt of duly signed acknowledgment and realisation of payment.
Offline method
Under offline mode applicant can download the application from https://www.tin-nsdl.com/services/tan/tan-introduction.html or obtain application form from TIN-FCs. Applicant can visit the nearest TIN Facilitation centre (TIN-FC) and submit the form 49B. The address of nearest TIN-FC can be searched from https://www.tin-nsdl.com/tin-facilities.html
